“Duration’s Wisdom II” is a walking meditation. The project was re-animated in Spain for Cambio Constante V, Sepu Space, Zaragosa, Spain in 2004. It was done on site depicting a final stage of mourning, from a series of paintings documenting grief, shown at Lance Fung Gallery in New York, 2003. In Spain I depicted a final stage as a piece in itself to acknowledge the attacks in Madrid which occurred the month before the exhibition. Durations Wisdom II, was a meditative, circular walking performance on a 20 foot square canvas on the floor, made by painting a circular, continuous line, using a long paintbrush, dipped in 12 silver bowls placed around the canvas of rotating black ink, brown pigment and water. Redipping the brush whenever needed, I simply walked as long as I could around and around the canvas for three hours, during the opening of an exhibition in Zaragoza Spain, shortly after the Madrid bombing. The work was an act of processing grief.
The original “Mourning After” series documents the movement of feeling/grief through the body in six paintings. The paintings are designed to my height and my horizontal arm span, so there is an immediate relationship to my body.“Duration’s Wisdom” depicts a final stage of mourning which concludes that in the end walking with what one has lost and revisiting the stages in a circular motion continues. As one moves farther away from the event with time and reflection we heal. We continue to walk with our loss; it never leaves us, but changes and we grow with it.
